چکیده
In the north Indian Ocean (NIO), maps of sea level anomaly from satellite altimetry were analysed January-1995 to December-2000. The study attempted trace trajectories individual mesoscale anomalies manually and understand seasonal changes in terms phase speed. Mesoscale are detected as concentric circular shapes diameters ~90 km 600 minimum 30 days life cycle. Relatively higher eddy kinetic energy was noticed northwestern region NIO. Individual anomalies, namely positive (warm, anticyclonic eddies) negative (cold, cyclonic showing travelling direction westward NIO basins. autumn, number is more than vice versa during summer. propagating (negative) Arabian Sea start appearing winter (spring) along (away from) west coast India 65°E; move spring/summer/autumn collide Somalia’s & coast. A daily global mesoscale ocean eddy dataset from satellite altimetry
Mesoscale ocean eddies are ubiquitous coherent rotating structures of water with radial scales on the order of 100 kilometers. Eddies play a key role in the transport and mixing of momentum and tracers across the World Ocean. We present a global daily mesoscale ocean eddy dataset that contains ~45 million mesoscale features and 3.3 million eddy trajectories that persist at least two days as ide...
متن کامل15 Years of Satellite Altimetry and Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics
The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 15 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in-situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quan...
متن کاملStatistical Characteristics of Mesoscale Eddies in the North Pacific Derived from Satellite Altimetry
The sea level anomaly data derived from satellite altimetry are analyzed to investigate statistical characteristics of mesoscale eddies in the North Pacific. Eddies are detected by a free-threshold eddy identification algorithm. The results show that the distributions of size, amplitude, propagation speed, and eddy kinetic energy of eddy follow the Rayleigh distribution. The most active regions...
متن کاملThe Dependence of Short-range Ocean Forecasts on Satellite Altimetry
Short-range ocean forecast and reanalysis systems routinely combine observations from satellite altimetry, satellite sea surface temperature (SST), and in situ temperature and salinity, to initialise global and regional ocean models. The most critical observation type for eddy-resolving applications is arguably satellite altimetry. To quantify the impact of satellite altimetry observations on a...
متن کاملNew Methods for Estimating Ocean Eddy Heat Transport Using Satellite Altimetry
Attempts to monitor ocean eddy heat transport are strongly limited by the sparseness of available observations and the fact that heat transport is a quadratic, sign-indefinite quantity that is particularly sensitive to unresolved scales. In this article, a suite of stochastic filtering strategies for estimating eddy heat transport are tested in idealized two-layer simulations of mesoscale ocean...
